Are You Solving the RIGHT Problem?
Nov 15, 2024Most of my clients want to make charting easier; they assume that if charts are DONE, they will FEEL better.
It makes sense. Charts NOT DONE takes a toll; it drags on us, keeps us up late, sometimes even prevents us from getting paid.
But if we drill in a bit more, it’s usually not about the charts. The concern is not really about our efficiency (which is getting tasks done quickly); at a deeper level, it’s really about doing the right work, and not getting stuck thinking that it’s a speed problem.
So many of us are getting caught up doing everything *just so*; sadly most of us don’t question whether WE should be doing the thing at all, or how well we need to do the thing, or what tools we could use.
Me too, friends.
I fix typos, and use capital letters and punctuation properly; until I remember that those things really don’t matter.
What does matter? Taking care of my patients, and leaving a good-enough record, leveraging tools that shortcut the things that I do over and over again.
It’s not about the charts. It’s about being clear with myself that my time and attention matter; and nitpicking over the note 15+ times/day saps my time and attention.
Now, does this automatically lead to charts closed each visit? No
But it does lead me to create more auto-text and templates (tools), to chart in a way where I can easily see info I will want in the future (problem list), and to prioritize “good enough” and “done” over elaborate.
It’s not about optimizing my notes. It’s about optimizing my habits and practices so that I take good care of them AND good care of myself.
How does THAT sound?
